Week 6: eCloth

This week, we learned about and researched the the eCloth. The eCloth is a cloth, similar to the Sham-Wow, that only needs water and the cloth to clean with. It removes 99% of all bacteria nd is reusable. Think about our use of paper towels; the US uses 2.5MIL tons of paper towels each year. Try switching to the eCloth!

WEEK 5: Pizza Boxes

This week, we worked on making our recycling plan more efficient. When you recycle pizza boxes, make sure that all the plastic wrap and food items are not in the box, because it makes it harder to recycle, and uses more energy to clean up and recycle. Please help out your recycling community by making it easier for them!

Week 4

Sea turtle nesting takes place from April to August. They nest three times during the season. Incubation takes 10 to 28 days. It requires 45 to 70 days for the 110 eggs per clutch to hatch. Sea turtles live for about 50 years if the aren't killed by pollution or choking on a piece of trash. About 1000 breeding females exist worldwide. This amazing turtle can weigh up to 100 pound and is widely protected.

Week 3: Alternatives for Styrofoam

30% of our fast-filling landfills are taken up by styrofoam. When styrofoam is wet or hot, it releases chemicals that contaminate your body and the earth. It was once a leading producer of toxic waste. There are enough styrofoam cups produced each day to circle the globe. Styrofoam never really goes away, so why not use alternatives like Bagasse (BAG-asse)?

Week 2

Hello, you may think that you need to be superhuman to save a whole planet, but it can be easier than you think. For instance, by just switching a light bulb or two in your home to those cool energy saving ones, you reduce the amount of electricity you use in that bulb by 75%! Or just take the half a second every once and a while to shut off lights in the rooms you're not in. So you don't have to be an energy-saving addict to help the earth! :)

Welcome to our Blog!

This blog is run by the Roots and Shoots group at the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School (CCLCS) in Orleans, Cape Cod, MA. We will be posting weekly about different ways to help the environment. This is an old video of two of our members talking about cleaning up Nauset Beach here on Cape.
